The Badminton World Federation has announced today that the Barfoot & Thompson BWF World Junior Championship scheduled for 2020 will now be played in January of 2021.The Championships were originally scheduled for September this year, and are to be played across the ditch in Auckland, New Zealand.
With a large volume of junior players looking to attend the competition, Badminton New Zealand CEO Joe Hitchcock was optimistic for the tournament “At the moment, the uncertainty of the global situation is challenging but we will work closely with the BWF and our event partners on plans for a rescheduled event. And we fully understand that we are guided by New Zealand Government regulations and international border control measures,” Hitchcock said.
Closer to home, Peter Roberts, General Manager of Sport Operations at Badminton Australia was pleased with the announcement, saying “It’s good to have clarity of when the event will be held, we can now work toward selection tournaments in the lead up to the World Junior Championships in January in Auckland.”
