Susan Taylor’s tenure as a BWF Certificated Umpire will end where it all began after umpiring at the recent Fu Zhou China Open.
Susan, one of three Australian umpires currently umpiring for the Badminton World Federation (BWF), begun her umpiring journey at the Australian Under 17 Championships as a volunteer. She quickly leapt into the chair honing her skills before attaining BWF accreditation in 1994, following this up with BWF Certification in 1998 and remaining at the highest possible rank for the remainder of her career.
During her career she has been able to travel the world doing something that she loves and has seen significant changes within the sport across her time. Asked by Tom Leonard, Communications & Events Manager at Badminton Oceania, what were some of the challenges she faced, Susan cited language barriers, travelling with a young family, technology advancement and social media as challenges. But with challenges also come lessons and opportunities and Susan was quick to point out that her career had many highlights making it hard to choose just one. For some perspective tournaments Susan has participated in include BWF World Junior Championships, BWF World Championships, countless BWF Tour stops and plenty more high profile events. She settled on two, the Men’s Doubles Super Series 2014 in Dubai, and the gold medal match for mixed doubles at the Youth Olympics in 2014, the latter being a unique opportunity for any BWF umpires to date as mixed doubles has only been played once at a Youth Olympics.
Badminton Australia would like to congratulate Susan on an amazing career with BWF, setting a great example for our future technical officials and cannot wait for her to continue her work in Australia and the Oceania region. Someone of Susan’s caliber will no doubt provide a valuable resource for mentoring and assessing the next generation of Technical Officials.
Well done Susan!
