Great Experience for BA NJS in Singapore

Written by  Wednesday, 07 December 2016 06:08

16 members of Badminton Australia’s National Junior Squad (NJS) have just returned from Singapore following an intensive week long camp that saw them participate in two international tournaments, while also undergoing some intensive training and sparring matches with local and international clubs. The camp was built around the Singapore Youth International which has quickly become one of the strongest junior tournaments in Asia, with a wide array of nations competing in singles and doubles event across all junior age groups. In addition to this the U13 and U15 players also took part in the Ocean Free Age Group Championship which saw many of the same international players competing who had travelled to Singapore for the Youth International.

While all players will learn a lot from these events, Australia’s best performance of the week came in the 13 & Under girls singles at the Ocean Free Championship where Sydney Go won her way through to the final. Unfortunately Sydney was unable to take the title, but it was a fantastic performance nonetheless. At the Singapore Youth International NJS member Otto Zhao together with his partner Ricky Tang reached the semi-final of the Under 13 boys doubles before losing to the eventual winners from Indonesia. Another great performance with both boys showing plenty of promise for the future.

Badminton Australia would like to thank National Junior Coaches Lenny Permana and Ben Walklate along with the team officials Brent Munday, Claudia Lam and Nick Kidd for their efforts in running the camp. A special mention also to those parents who provided much appreciated assistance to the BA team.
