Victory over Scotland in WJC Opener

Australia has defeated Scotland 3-2 in a tense opening tie at the World Junior Championships in Spain. After the team jumped out to a 2-1 lead the pairing of Jacob Schueler and Huaidong Tang had the chance to close out the tie when they led 20-17 in the third game of the men’s doubles, however they were unable to clinch the final point needed, going down 20-22. With the tie score now level at 2-2 it was down to the women’s doubles pairing of Joy Lai and Tiffany Ho to bring home the win. The Aussie duo established an early lead of 11-3 at the first game break and were never trouble from there on, winning the match 21-12 21-18 and securing the tie for Australia.

Earlier in the tie Huaidong Tang and Janet Son had got the team off to the perfect start with a close three game victory in what was a crucial mixed doubles. Scotland levelled things up with Australian World Junior Championship debutant Kai Chen Teoh unable to overcome his Scottish opponent in the men’s singles, before Joy Lai re-established the team’s lead with a strong win the women’s singles.

Australia will play their final group game again England today, with the match starting at 630pm AEDT. The match will decide who tops the group after England defeated Scotland 4-1 in the evening session on day 1. First place in the group would guarantee a top 16 finish for the Aussies, while a loss to England will result second place in the group and would leave the team to battle it out for positions 17-32.
