Just last week it was 14 year old Joy Lai who was making headlines after taking out two titles at the Oceania Junior Championships in Tahiti. This weekend it was another 14 year old, Alice Wu from Victoria who stole the show, winning the Girl’s Singles title at the Australian Junior International.

Australia’s success continued in the Girl’s Doubles where Gronya Somerville and Natasha Sharp beat compatriots Vinning Mak and Jennifer Tam in the Final. International players won the 3 other disciplines, defeating Australian’s in the final of each.

Wu defeated a string of Australian’s on her way to the final before defeating Mexico’s Haramara Gaitan 21-17 21-17 in two closely fought games. The recent performances of Wu and Lai are a great sing for Australian badminton and shows real future potential.

Somerville and Sharp got off to a slow start in their final, with Mak and Tam comfortably taking the opening game 14-21. The loss of the first game seemed to wake Somerville and Sharp from their slumber as they powered through the second game 21-7. They then continued their dominance through the third game, winning the decider 21-13.

Daniel Guda, fresh off his win at Oceania Junior Championships had to fight every inch of the way just to make the final of the boy’s singles, with two of his matches in excess of 1 hour. His fatigue showed in the final as he was defeated 14-21 10-21 by Andrew Susanto of Indonesia.

Eric Vuong and Joy Lai also had a tough route to the final winning three game matches in both their quarter and semi-final. They were unable to keep their run going in the final as they we defeated by Luis Ramon Garrido and Haramara Gaitan of Mexico 21-17 21-18.

Anthony Joe and Seng Low had a comfortable run into the final, not losing a game on their way. However after dropping a tight first game in the final against Sri Lankans Dullewa and Dias they couldn’t find their way back into the game. Losing the final 21-23 16-21.
