Congratulations to Veeran and Choo on an excellent win in the Women’s doubles over South Africa which is Australia’s first Olympic win since 2000. Chief Executive Paul Brettell said "this is a positive step in the right direction for badminton and shows that badminton is capable of competing at the highest level. It is hoped that enhanced financial support in the future from the Australian Sports Commission will assist badminton with its ultimate goal of winning medals in the longer term. Badminton is a sport of potential for the future, has immense appeal to the changing demographic profile of Australia and with improved recognition from the ASC and the AIS/SASI network badminton will achieve the success of other sports who have been generously treated since the establishment of the AIS in 1981. Sports with longer term potential need to be part of future planning by the ASC and its partners".
